Not to be confused with our business name 'agau', the Maori word 'akau' (aaa-ka-oo) meaning coast or shore has a perfect symmetry with this beautiful hand crafted jewellery.
The settings are Paua Shell, a shellfish found only in the coastal waters around New Zealand. The numbers are controlled under a restricted quota and collected by free diving (no scuba). During preparation, these shells are hand ground to remove the hard outer crust and reveal the striking colours of the natural product. Selected parts of the shell are then taken and polished to create the pieces required for jewellery. The akau pieces remain original in form and shape and are therefore individual in every sense. No two pieces are identical.
These amazingly natural settings are then married against sterling silver or fashioned with rear casts to simulate natural stone. The timeless harmony of land and sea is celebrated in each piece.
